Why Asphalt Shingles Actually Fail.
An asphalt shingle is a fiberglass mat saturated with asphalt — and asphalt is a petroleum product held together by volatile oils. Those oils are what give the shingle its flexibility, its waterproofing, and its ability to hold the ceramic granules on its surface.
Heat and UV drive those oils out. Not suddenly — continuously, from day one. As the oil content drops, the asphalt hardens. A hardened shingle can't expand and contract with the daily temperature swing anymore, so it starts to crack at a microscopic level. The bond holding the granules gives way. The granules wash into the gutter. Without granules, the exposed asphalt takes the full UV load directly, which drives out the remaining oil faster.
It's a feedback loop, and in Louisiana it runs fast.

When a roofing contractor looks at a 15-year-old Baton Rouge roof and says "it's at the end of its life," what they're actually observing is oil depletion — a chemical condition — and calling it a structural one.
